What is a Health Captive?
Captives are self-funded health plans that pool together multiple employers (Plan Sponsors) to spread risk, stabilize costs, and provide greater control with transparency.

How are the Plans Aggregated?
The plans are aggregated by joining a captive cell. Each member’s monthly premium provides funds to that cell, which becomes a shared risk layer for the captive members. The captive layer is spread across all members reducing the need for insurance and providing an opportunity for more equity in excess reserves.

Is Brazos National Health Plan a qualified plan?
Yes.  BNHP provides ACA compliant plans.

What are the advantages of the Brazos National Health Plan?
The advantages of the BNHP include:
  • Tailored Coverage – the captive can custom-write a policy to fit the needs of its insureds, even when such coverages are unavailable or prohibitively expensive in the commercial market.
  • Pricing Stability – stable loss experience results in stable premiums. Since the captive insures only the risks of its owners, broad market conditions that result in fluctuations to premiums may not affect your captive insurance program.
  • Unbundled – Each plan sponsor can choose their TPA, Network, PBM and retained risk limit, and if necessary, make changes without disturbing the plan. The captive, in aggregate, can choose to change stop loss carriers if warranted.
  • Greater Transparency – Our platform provides comprehensive reports that track all funds coming into and being paid out of the plan.
  • Improved Cash Flow– The plan sponsor can improve cash flow by paying claims as paid, not in advance as with traditional insurance.
  • Retained Risk Reserves. Excess reserves of the retained risk are owned by the plan sponsor.

What type of organizations will benefit from Brazos National Health Plan?
Brazos National Health Plan is a good option for companies with engaged management that are willing to collaborate with us to manage the plan.  Companies with low utilization are particularly prone to benefiting from our plan as they are likely subsidizing bad risks in their current pool.  Businesses frustrated with continuously rising costs and lack of control over their health insurance will find this plan empowering.

What Do You Need to Provide a Quote?
Brazos has developed a Data Quoting Template to be filled out with the following information:
  • Basic information about the business.
  • Census information on plan Participants.
  • Information on the current plan including benefit summary and 3 years of rate history and claim reports.
  • Our proposal will provide a detailed pricing summary with a 5-year projection of total costs.

How long does it take to get a quote?
It takes about two (2) weeks from receiving the completed data template to generate a proposal which is then presented to the Plan Sponsor for consideration.  Please note- Timing is critical as claim data must be 90 days current to the target effective date.

Why Haven’t I Seen This Before?
BNHP was built exclusively for ARM Mid-America members and their clients. Captive plans are gaining market share as Plan Sponsors continue to seek alternatives to the limited options in the fully insured market. It is a sophisticated solution to a top line expense item and requires collaboration with senior management.

What Involvement Will the Plan Sponsor Have in the Administration of BNHP?
The day-to-day administration functions of this plan are handled by the TPA and other contracted vendors, just like a traditional insurance plan. There is no more administration than needed with a traditional insurance plan.

What Technology is Available Through BNHP?
The TPAs offer Benefit Administration Platforms and can often integrate with 3rd Party Ben Admin Systems. We also have access to a secure 3rd Party application for members to access benefits via their smart phones.
